As with most things worthy of note, I’m certain this concept came off the back of a conversation with my friend Lou. To supplement our infrequent, in-person meetings we’ve taken to sharing messages and voice notes back and forth as and when the thoughts land – all of which makes for interesting commentary and perspective. It’s like a podcast for two but with a slight time delay, a place to vent and an endless source of things to ponder as I go about my days.

But back to the list - I think to have one should be mandatory – if for no other reason than to serve as a counter-weight against the negative connotations we’ve come to associate with midlife. You know what I’m referring to… bodies getting older, menopause, to go grey or not to go grey, things not working the way they used to, family stresses etc etc – the correlations that we first think of when it comes to adapting to this life stage. Having given enough attention to those elements in recent years, it now feels good to redress the balance - to focus in on what it means to me to live as a midlife woman now.

The list below serves as a reminder of the things that leave me thrumming with a sense of life, vitality and happy moments… and if I say so myself, I think it’s a pretty Fucking Fabulous List…

A knowing smile.

Having soft, moisturised skin.

An appreciation of the fluidity of life.

The scent of morning coffee drifting up the stairs.

Opening a bottle of champagne for no reason.

The act of putting on a beautiful white cotton shirt.

Absorbing words of wisdom from my fellow Fucking Fabulous females.

Adopting a signature scent – mine is Thé Noir 29 by Le Labo, but I hear that Tom Ford has one actually called Fucking Fabulous. You can always rely on Tom.

Knowing how that signature scent smells on your skin and the effect it has on others.

Taking a nap in the afternoon sunshine.

Saying “No Thank You” and not giving it a second thought.

Wearing all black and owning it.

Looking down to catch a glimpse of your tanned feet and painted toes.

Appreciating the fall of fabric against skin.

Becoming exquisitely attuned to the seasonal changes displayed by Mother Nature.

A sense of ease.

A fine chain necklace resting on a sun-warmed neck.

Throw your head back laughter.

The sea as it begins to warm up for the season.

Living without regret.

A cashmere jumper with sleeves that reach to the very tips of your fingers.

Easy conversation that goes on for hours.

Appreciating and understanding the quality over quantity factor when it comes to sex.

Striped oversized pyjamas.

Red lipstick - just because.

No longer falling into the trap of the “I’ll be happy when…” mindset.

Cultivating an air of calm and grace when all those around you are losing their shit.

Knowing that when you lose your shit, there are those that will return the favour.

Not saving the scented candle for an occasion.

Expecting the unexpected.

Giving zero fucks.

Staying curious.

Making a supper solely based around cheese, bread and wine.

Acceptance of what is inevitable.

Getting comfortable with adding “…because I don’t want to” to the end of a sentence.

Yoga on a Friday morning.

Dresses with pockets. Especially this dress with pockets.

Feel free to borrow some or all of mine… but only if you tell me what you would put on your own Fucking Fabulous List…
