shelf and coffee table decor

For the past year I’ve become somewhat obsessed with the concept of what to put on our coffee table... but more importantly, actually finding a coffee table.

In terms of living room shelves, we now have a lot more actual shelf space - albeit by way of a temporary IKEA stopgap for a few more years. It’s been a joy to give all the books that have been floating around the house a permanent home… there were multiple piles hiding in multiple places. The shelves were up by the end of last June and almost a year later, I still find myself going from room to room and swiping and swapping things to shelf-faff with… a game that never gets old. Imagine how much I could ramp that up when we get built-in’s one day.

The coffee table process has been a bit more arduous with two ordered online since last May and both returned. The words “coffee” and “table” became something of a swear word in this house for many months and in order to facilitate marital peace, I didn’t utter either of those words between the months of August 25 and January 26. We think (for god’s sake cross your fingers), that we’re now on the right track having ordered one from a small local company, The Dancing Woodman. And not just because it’s an excellent name. They offer a choice of designs, sizes, finishes and tweaks…i.e to shelf or not to shelf. Wait… a shelf under the coffee table?? Even more faffing opportunities! Our order arrives sometime in April/early May… I’m hoping around the same time as the sofa. Prepare for much faffing to hit my Instagram feed.

Meanwhile, just to scratch the itch so to speak, here are some objects of desire…

a few ideas

Apart from the obvious stacks of coffee table books I’ve been gathering for eons, I’m thinking a couple of trays… one seagrass, one smaller wood maybe. Candles obvs. A low height portable lamp,a dish or two to corral the things that float around the room … and potentially some kind of small wooden box for Patrick to put the TV remotes in as opposed to leaving them on the sofa!

No doubt I’ll get carried away to start with, rearrange it all twenty six times in the first week and find that space to put feet up on a cushion may be in short supply. But I’m so looking forward to seeing that part of the room begin to pull together once the dark wood table sits atop a rug (yet to be decided on), in front of the sofa. Whilst it feels a little bitter sweet - we held off on anything for this side of the room until after we said goodbye to Biscuit as a new sofa was out of the question - I’m really looking forward to having piles of interior and lifestyle books to hand. I’m already imagining lazy weekend mornings… a slow start to the day, leafing through them slowly, coffee in hand and sun streaming in through the windows.

And all this from a coffee table.
